I've been looking into shotguns for home defense and could use some input from those who know their stuff. I'm debating between a 12-gauge and a 20-gauge. I get that the 12-gauge packs a punch, but I’m worried about the recoil, especially in tight spaces. The 20-gauge seems easier to handle but maybe not as effective.

What should I consider for barrel length? I’m thinking shorter might be better for maneuverability. What about stock setups or any specific features that could make a difference? I’m also interested in brands or models that are known for reliability.

And on the training side, how important is it? I've shot a bit, but nothing too serious. What kind of practice should I focus on to feel prepared?

18.5 " bbl 1100 12ga in the BR- 18.5" 20ga 870 in the LR - 18.5" 870 in garage all with bird shot.
Familiarize yourself with chosen weapon so running it is 2nd nature! Make sure you can run it in the light of day and the dark of night!!
Brand, although not crucial, but I've been using Rem. since the 70s so my go to choice.

I took a buddy's 12 and a loaner 20 down a tight lane; the 12 hits like a freight train until you use reduced loads, the 20's friendlier. Short 18–20″ barrels and a pistol grip helped. Train dry-fire, reloads, low-light and pick what you'll practice
