Been thinking about building my first AR-15 for a while now. Finally started diving into parts. Honestly, it feels kind of overwhelming. I've seen some decent deals, but I can't tell what's actually worth it.

I'm leaning towards a basic build and probably sticking with 5.56 unless someone here has a better suggestion for newbies like me. Just trying to keep it simple at first.

Are there brands or parts you guys would steer clear of? I keep reading about hidden costs—like, what should I watch out for? Sometimes I wonder if I'd be better off just buying a complete rifle.

I'd really appreciate any advice, or just stories of what you wish you'd known when you started. Thanks!

Palmetto State Armory. Get to their website, but something simple and cost effective, learn the rifle, gain experience, and THEN think about building your own. I'd not worry about building your own unless you're REALLY going to get in to it. Instead I'd be looking at buying complete uppers and lowers for your needs. If you're building a target/hunting gun, that is different than a "personal defense weapon". PSA is a good place to start, then do a search as you'll find a whole boat load of stuff out there. Also... stick to the 5.56 cartridge and leave the other stuff for when you get bored. K.I.S.S.
